'Red Building in Forest, Hale County, Alabama' by William Christenberry

William Christenberry

An iconic Southern artist and pioneer of color photography, William Christenberry (American, 1936–2016) dedicated his career to articulating the unique character of his native Hale County, Alabama. For four decades beginning in the 1960s, Christenberry photographed the same locations—the Palmist Building, a green barn, and Coleman’s Cafe—each year, creating a prolonged study of place and the passage of time. With 140 prints spanning his career, the High Museum holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Christenberry’s work.
