'Mami Wata Figure' by Igbo Artist, Nigeria

Celebrating Women

Art that celebrates women, both real and mythic, is a popular theme in African art. The High Museum’s collection includes one of the most impressive sculptures ever made of Mami Wata, pidgin English for “Mother of Water,” an auspicious being of great spiritual power celebrated throughout Africa and the African diaspora.

We’re reopening to all members and frontline workers July 7–17 and to all visitors on July 18.
