Art of Ancient Africa
Among the earliest works in the High Museum’s entire collection is a polished stone implement (ca. 8,500–3,500 BCE) created in the fertile region of what is now the Sahara Desert. Other ancient works include terracotta vessels (third–eleventh century CE) from the Bura area and figurative sculptures (ca. thirteenth–seventeenth century CE) from the region of Djenne, Mali, a city whose foundations were laid more than 2,000 years ago.
