We Shared a Ripe Mango

Looking for inspiration from the belief systems of African peoples and their descendants throughout the African Diaspora, Renee Stout embarks on an anthropological investigation characterized by self examination, self empowerment and self healing. Her suite of paintings entitled “Pretty Wings (Part 1)” consists of four works with enigmatic titles that evoke personal memories of shared experiences: “We Shared a Ripe Mango,” “No Match for Your Demons,” “We Were Laughing on the Sun Porch,” and “The Missing Book.” Each panel presents a vignette that suggests the fragment of a narrative which is left for the viewer to complete. “Pretty Wings (Part 1)” is rich with images of mysterious objects that conjure pivotal moments of life hidden in the recesses of memory.
