Description
This abstract photograph demonstrates Weston’s understanding of how a straight photograph, manipulated only through choices of light and framing, could reveal extraordinary forms and surprises in even the most common subjects. A viewer might easily mistake this palm tree for a factory smokestack—only the title or close examination reveals its true nature. This newfound appreciation for simplicity and the everyday was a key aspect of the early 1900s Modernist movement.
