Description
Looking for inspiration from the belief systems of African peoples and their descendants throughout the African Diaspora, Renee Stout embarks on an anthropological investigation characterized by self examination, self empowerment and self healing. Her suite of paintings entitled “Pretty Wings (Part 1)” consists of four works with enigmatic titles that evoke personal memories of shared experiences: We Shared a Ripe Mango, No Match for Your Demons, We Were Laughing on the Sun Porch, and The Missing Book. Each panel presents a vignette that suggests a fragment of a narrative left for the viewer to complete, rich with images of mysterious objects which conjure pivotal moments of life hidden in the recesses of memory.
