Description
By looking directly into the camera with a coy self-assured smile, actress Dana Desboro Glover, who married Steichen a year after this portrait was taken, appears confident and relaxed. Unlike many women through the history of photography, Glover has agency over her portrayal in that she is both aware of the camera’s presence and appears to be in intimate dialogue with the photographer. The soft focus on her face and sharp focus on the apple subtly refer to the story of Adam and Eve.
